ADDIS ABABA – August 03, 2019 – Hussien Shibo, 53, is an Ethiopian Athletics coach, who wrote history with his perpetual success in Ethiopian Athletics. He is married and father to eight. Born in Chilalo, Oromia Regional state, Hussien started practicing sport at his early age, inspired by his Uncle, whom by then was a member of the Ethiopian Athletics National Team in Javelin.

Unlike his coaching, Hussien had unsuccessful and short span of running career, but he had been very instrumental to most of Ethiopian athletes International triumphs in track events. Legends such as: Derartu Tulu, Haile Gebresilassie, Fatuma Roba, Keneisa Bekele, Tirunesh Dibaba, Meseret Defar and prodigies like Selomon Barega etc… were coached by him, when the whole world bowed for their supremacy in the Olympic Games and World Championships.

The Predator

Despite representing his province and joining the Federal Prisons Athletics Club in Addis Ababa at his early age, his days with the club as an athlete were short lived. Just after four years of training with the club, the administrators saw his strength in leadership and appointed him as a coach, a decision which he initially disregarded and even quit the club for three months until he was later convinced by his friends to accept it.

“Accepting the coaching role was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. I cannot thank them enough, those who saw the best in me while I couldn’t.” says Hussien.

Husien, Poached and nurtured thousands of talents both in his club and in national team roles throughout his three decades of coaching career. In the meantime he had been leading the Ethiopian Track National Team in Every Olympic Games since 1992, also taking the team to nine “world championships” and “four all African games” so far. Considering his experience, expertise and age, one might not be wrong to think that he still has a lot to go in terms of participating in more competitions and to achieve success.

According to him, he had coached athletes who have won 365 medals so far. You see it right, 365 medals! Those numbers are expected to go higher, since he is preparing the team for the 12th All African Games and the 2019 World Championships in Doha. That is why most people call him “The Medals Predator”.

Coaching Philosophy

To his athletes he is the perfect coach, who can understand his athletes without exchanging a single word and always available for discussions about anything including their personal affairs.

“I am a pure pragmatist. I cannot say I am this type of coach or another.” Hussien explained about his coaching Philosophy. “I always adjust myself with the situations, If I need to be a Democrat I will be, If I need to be a Laissez-faire I could be too, in fact if have to be a dictator and if that is the right thing to do, well, I have no problem at all to be a dictator too” he Concludes.

Chief Super Intendant Hussien Shibo

Apart from his club and national team coaching, Hussien is also a top security official at Ethiopian Federal Prisons office. He reached the rank of Chief Super Intendant, the highest possible rank in the system (which is equivalent to Commander and Colonel), ten years ago due to the huge amount of success he had achieved through his coaching career during the past quarter of the century.

When asked about his ambitions, Hussien said, “I always want to see my country winning in every competition. I do not want to see our athlete coming second to anyone; it gives me pain. Therefore, my ambition is to nurture a future generation of champions who could sweep all the medals in the podium as much as possible and to restore the famous “Green Flood” way of victory.
