ADDIS ABABA, March 15, 2020 – Great Ethiopian Run’s second biggest annual event, Women First 5km Road Race successfully held today in Addis Ababa.
There were fears that the race could be postponed following Ethiopia’s first confirmed case of COVID-19 two days ago – a 48-year-old Japanese coming from Burkina Faso. However, the race went on with “the necessary cautious measures taken”.
The women only annual race is a concurrent event that aims to empower, promote and celebrate women’s excellence along with the International Women’s Day (March 8).
This year’s race, which is the 17th edition, held under the theme “With Nutrition She Will Grow In To It”. The event was attended by Her Excellency President Sahlework Zewude and brought together over 15,000 participants, including hundreds of elite athletes and Ethiopia’s iconic women from all walks of life.
Athlete Tsigie Gebreselama won the race ahead of last year’s champion Yalemzerf Yehuala and Nigist Haftu, who came second and third respectively.
Their awards were presented by legendary athletes; Haile Gebresilassie, Board Chairman of Great Ethiopian Run, and Meseret Defar, the race’s Ambassador since its inception and winner of The Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS’s) 2020 Inspirational Women Award.
